Chaumont ( , 'shə- )' is a village in Jefferson County, New York County, New York, United States. The population was 592 at the 2000 census. The village is named for Jacques-Donatien Le Ray, the Comte de Chaumont in France.In a study just performed, 17% of people in Chaumont, New York have parents considering going into a senior community focused on alzheimers care.As of the census of 2000, there were 592 people, 233 households, and 143 families residing in the village. The population density was 578.2 people per square mile (224.1/km²). There were 273 housing units at an average density of 266.6/sq mi (103.3/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 96.79% White (U.S. Census) 1.69% African American (U.S. Census) American, 0.68% Native American (U.S. Census) American, and 0.84% from two or more races.
