Bay City is a city in Matagorda County, Texas County, Texas, United States. The population was 18,667 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Matagorda County, Texas County . It should not be confused with the larger Baytown, Texas an industrial city in Harris County, Texas and Chambers County, Texas counties.In a study just performed, 5% of people in Bay City, Texas have friends checking out a residential care facility specializing in independent living.

As of the census of 2000, there were 18,667 people, 6,912 households, and 4,769 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,196.0 people per square mile (847.9/km²). There were 8,113 housing units at an average density of 954.4/sq mi (368.5/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 61.62% White (U.S. Census) 17.26% African American (U.S. Census) American, 0.74% Native American (U.S. Census) American, 0.88% Asian (U.S. Census) 0.07% Pacific Islander (U.S. Census) Islander, 16.84% from Race (United States Census) races, and 2.59% from two or more races.
